Add these Habits to your Routine to Improve your English
Learning a language is always a challenge. It can prove to be an even bigger challenge if you don’t have native speakers around you.
In such cases, putting in conscious efforts every single day to improve your communication skills is vital.
Developing a habit can take a person anywhere between 18–254 days. Good habits will help you enrich your personality with good values and morals. They will also help you live a healthy life and navigate your path to success.
Here are some things that you should consider making a habit to improve your English -
Set Smart Goals -
It is crucial that you plan your language learning process. Smart goals are usually set by entrepreneurs to plan their business development process but this concept can be applied in almost every aspect of life.
S — Specific
M — Measurable
A — Attainable/Achievable
R — Relevant
T — Time-Bound
Make sure your plan of action fits all of these criteria to ensure success.
Focus on vocabulary
A good vocabulary will help you in gaining fluency over the language. As for all the times you were stuck with “a..a…a” you will now have a word to replace it with. Here are a few tips that may help you improve your English vocabulary -
- Make notes — Every time you come across a new word/phrase, write it down in a notebook/diary. Then, explain its meaning and usage. Write the sample sentence that you came across and then try to form one sentence of your own.
- Categorise your notes — This isn’t necessary but will help you stay organized. You can categorise your notes by parts of speech or by usage.

Speaking and Writing
When I was in school, every other day I would pick a random topic and write a 400-word essay on it. Then, I’d read it out loud. This practice helped me in improving my English speaking and writing skills. This is one of the most effective ways, in my humble opinion, to improve your communication skills -
- You can do it every day or once a week, depending on your preference and comfort level.
- You can choose the difficulty level of the topic.
- You can be as creative with your piece as you want.
- There is no word limit.
Reading
Everyone says this but how many of us actually inculcate reading as a habit in our lives. It is a foolproof way to improve your English. You can start by reading just for 10 minutes every day and gradually increase the time. You will without having to study grammar understand many grammar rules, improve your reading fluency and vocabulary.
Patience and perseverance are key to success. Inculcate these habits into your daily schedule and you shall see remarkable growth!
